Charles runs the boutique regulatory consultancy firm DA Strategy, employing a team of circa 25, supporting new MGAs from establishment to becoming regulated in their own right. A recognised market expert in delegated underwriting, Charles had a successful career at XL Catlin (now AXAXL) where he was responsible for the Delegated Authority division, growing it in size and profitability over his 24 years tenure.

Hello, I am Colin Clulow, head of short tail classes here at VUW. Prior to joining VUW, I worked for a very large corporate insurer with a large insurance platform and an equally large Lloyds of London syndicate. Over the last couple of years, I’ve focused heavily on portfolio underwriting and innovation, not just as a means of additional revenue stream, but also as a way to reduce operational expenses and frictional costs. With this focus I was immediately attracted to VUW : its operational model and its vision for the future.

I’ve spent most of my professional insurance life underwriting, broking, networking, as well as managing and developing strategies for short tail classes. Not just in the London market, but also in the international and North American market places. In my experience, short tail classes tend to be data rich, and a great dove-tail with algorithmic and rule-based underwriting.

Over the many years I’ve been involved in the London market, at key moments and events I have both witnessed and played my role in rapidly responding to change in a pragmatic and innovative way. I believe the London market is at a new milestone or key moment : virtual underwriting is here .. and not going away. The future is both exciting and bright. I relish the challenges and partnering with like-minded carriers and brokers to achieve our common goal.
